How to Prepare Your Home for Sale

Once you make the decision to sell your home, the next step is to prepare it for sale. This process usually takes the average home seller between two weeks to a month, although this depends on several factors such as the condition of your home, the amount of money you wish to invest in repairs, and how quickly you need to move. The idea of taking on multiple projects may seem overwhelming, but with a simple checklist, it doesn’t have to be. Here are 12 easy steps to prepare your home for sale:

  1. Declutter and pack away excess items

2. Organize closets and drawers

3. Make sure the front door is inviting & repaint if necessary

4. Pack away personal belongings such as pictures or anything with your name on it

5. Repaint walls white or a neutral color if needed

6. Make necessary repairs

7. Deep clean your home, or hire a house cleaner to do it for you

8. Pressure wash the exterior of your home

9. Clean your gutters, exterior windows, and screens

10. Pull weeds, mow your lawn, and do some light landscaping

11. Replace light bulbs that have gone out

12. Make sure that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working

After you’ve completed these tasks, the next step is to interview local real estate agents, so that you can come up with a strategic pricing and marketing plan for listing your home.
